Most keyboard enthusiasts are familiar with Taeha Types, one of the most popular keyboard building Youtubers and steamers. After watching him solder quality boards together, I found myself wondering what soldering iron he uses, as I was in the market for a new soldering iron myself.

In this article, I’ll cover what soldering iron Taeha Types uses, why you may or may not want to use that soldering iron yourself, and good alternatives to Taeha Types’ soldering iron.

What Soldering Iron Does Taeha Types Use?

Taeha Types uses two different soldering irons, the UY CHAN TS100 Portable Soldering Iron and the Hakko FX888D-23BY Soldering Station. Taeha uses the UY CHAN TS100 more often on stream for builds, because its small size makes it more convenient for capturing everything on camera. Both are solid soldering irons, however, they provide different benefits.

UY CHAN TS100 Portable Soldering Iron

The UY CHAN TS100 Portable Soldering Iron is a good choice for most keyboard enthusiasts, as it’s lightweight, convenient, and easy to use. If you’re mostly looking to work on keyboards or other small electronics projects every so often, this would be a good soldering iron to get. It’s a fairly affordable option as well, making it a great first soldering iron if you’re not sure if building electronics projects is for you.

Hakko FX888D-23BY Soldering Station

The Hakko FX888D-23BY Soldering Station is much larger than the UY CHAN soldering iron. Hakko is a well-known name in the soldering equipment industry and makes very reliable products. If you’re looking to build keyboards as an entry point into larger electronics projects, it might be worth investing in this soldering station. A soldering station like this will last for years, so if you have the space and are serious about soldering, this is the one to get.

Should You Use the Same Soldering Iron Taeha Types Uses?

Both the soldering irons that Taeha Types uses are good choices, so you can’t really go wrong using the same soldering irons he uses. Most keyboard enthusiasts won’t need more features from their soldering iron than either of these soldering irons provide.

Alternatives to Taeha Types Soldering Irons

While Taeha Types uses some solid soldering irons, they’re not necessarily the right soldering irons for everyone. We’ve rounded up some great alternatives to the UY CHAN TS100 and the Hakko FX888D-23BY for every budget.

Best Budget Alternative – ANBES Soldering Iron Kit

While the soldering irons Taeha Types uses are relatively affordable, they won’t necessarily fit every budget. If you’re looking for a solid cheap soldering iron, look no further than the ANBES Soldering Iron Kit. While it doesn’t boast many features, this kit provides a ton of value. It should be everything you need to get started, including multiple tips, solder, and a solder sucker (when you’re first starting out, a way to remove solder is a must).

Best Portable Alternative – NovelLife TS80P Soldering Iron

A popular alternative to the UY CHAN TS100 Soldering Iron that Taeha Types uses is the NovelLife TS80P Soldering Iron. It has many of the same features the UY CHAN TS100 does, and the same 100C – 400C temperature range. The TS80P might be more comfortable to hold for extended periods of time given its shape, however, I’d likely still go with the TS100 because of its lower cost and better overall reviews.

Weller WE1010NA Digital Soldering Station with Brass Sponge Tip Cleaner

Best Solder Station Alternative – Weller WE1010NA Digital Soldering Station

The Weller WE1010NA Digital Soldering Station is a popular alternative to the Hakko FX888D-23BY that Taeha Types uses. Weller is also a very well-known name in the soldering business, so it’s a quality machine backed by a reputable company. This station has many of the same features as the Hakko station. If you live outside the US, you shouldn’t get this machine, however, as it’s designed for US power voltages.

In conclusion, if you’re looking to get into soldering your own keyboards, the UY CHAN TS100 and the Hakko FX888D-23BY soldering irons Taeha Types uses are solid options. If you’re on a tight budget, however, the ANBES Soldering Iron Kit is probably your best bet.
